A ten-module introduction to Amazon Web Services covering compute, storage, databases, networking, monitoring and cost. Every module pairs a short explanation with a guided lab on live infrastructure.

What participants can do afterwards

Launch and size compute instances for a stated workload, and explain the cost consequence of each choice.

Design a storage layout that separates object and block storage correctly, with lifecycle rules in place.

Build a virtual network with correctly scoped security groups, and explain why each rule exists.

Set up monitoring and an audit trail that would satisfy an internal review.

Find and remove waste in a running account.

Curriculum

Ten modules, in sequence

Each module is self-contained. A shorter engagement can take modules one to five; a full cohort runs all ten and closes with the assessment.

  1. Introduction to AWS and cloud computing

    Service model, regions and availability zones, the shared responsibility model, and how to read the console.

  2. Compute β€” Amazon EC2

    Instance types, launch and lifecycle, key pairs, and sizing for a given workload.

  3. Storage β€” Amazon S3 and EBS

    Object versus block storage, bucket policies, lifecycle rules, and volume management.

  4. Databases β€” RDS and DynamoDB

    Relational and key-value models, backup and restore, and when each is the right choice.

  5. Networking β€” VPCs and security groups

    Subnets, routing, gateways, and the difference between security groups and network ACLs.

  6. Advanced networking, part one

    Peering, endpoints and hybrid connectivity patterns.

  7. Monitoring and logs β€” CloudWatch and CloudTrail

    Metrics, alarms, log groups, and building an audit trail that stands up to review.

  8. Advanced networking, part two

    Load balancing, DNS routing policies, and designing for failure across zones.

  9. Cost management and optimisation

    Pricing models, tagging discipline, budgets, and finding waste in a running account.

  10. Review and assessment

    A guided build combining the previous modules, assessed against a published rubric.

Who this is for

Engineers and IT staff moving to cloud infrastructure for the first time, and technical teams who use cloud services already but have never been taught the underlying model. No prior AWS experience is assumed.

How it is assessed

A guided build in the final module, marked against a published rubric. Results are handed to the client together with a short note on what the cohort can now do independently.
